WSOP History: Looking Back at the November (and October) Nines

AnthonyThompson • Level 24: 10,000-20,000, 0 ante
2013 WSOP November Nine
2013 WSOP November Nine

No stage in poker stood as a bigger goal for a tournament player than the final table of the WSOP Main Event. For years, that meant going to sleep knowing you had the chance of a lifetime, to go down in poker history in the next few days as the cameras captured your every bet, raise and fold.

All of that changed in 2008.

The year after Jerry Yang's Main Event victory was broadcast to all on ESPN's standard tape delay, organizers made a decision to try to increase the excitement and anticipation around the final table: after the final nine was reached, play would be paused. At that point, everyone left would go home with 9th-place money and the players would reconvene a few months later to play out the final table on a short tape delay.

That lasted until 2016, and this is the history of the November (and October) Nines.

Depaulo Dodges Cheong's Straight Draw

MattHansen • Level 23: 8,000-1,600, 0 ante

Ryan "Joeyisamush" Depaulo opened from the cutoff for 32,000 and was called by Joseph "biueberry" Cheong in the big blind.

Cheong checked the flop of {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{8-Spades} and Depaulo put in a bet of 16,000. Cheong fired back with a check-raise to 52,000 and Depaulo called.

The turn came {4-Diamonds}. Cheong bet 88,000 and was called by Depaulo.

Both players checked the {5-Spades} river and Cheong turned over {10-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{9-Hearts} to show his missed straight draw.

Depaulo showed {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} to win the pot with two pair, aces and queens.

Alex Rocha
Alex Rocha

Alex "RIP_Neiko" Rocha raised to 42,000 from the hijack and "Bobbybaldwin" called from the button. Both blinds folded and it was heads-up action to the flop, which came down {5-Spades}{k-Hearts}{q-Spades}.

Rocha bet all in for 41,266 and "Bobbybaldwin" called.

Alex "RIP_Neiko" Rocha: {9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
"Bobbybaldwin": {j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{a-Spades}

Rocha got it in good and held through the {2-Spades} turn. However, the {10-Hearts} river gave "Bobbybaldwin" a straight and sent Rocha to the rail in 26th place for $2,474.
