WSOP Legend: 10-Time Bracelet Winner Phil Ivey

Chad_Holloway • Level 33: 20,000-40,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Few poker players have captured the attention of the poker universe quite like Phil Ivey. There have been plenty of champions of the game who crushed it at the felt, but none who built up the mystique of Ivey, who remains to this day arguably the most magnetic player in poker despite results that no longer match his days of utmost dominance.

A day after the anniversary of Ivey's induction into the Poker Hall of Fame, PokerNews examines the legacy of his WSOP success. Prior to 2000, Ivey didn't have any recorded WSOP cashes.

The 23-year-old didn't waste any time establishing himself as one of the top up-and-coming players. That year, after already making one final table and finishing fifth, Ivey secured his first bracelet. He beat none other than fellow Hall of Famer Amarillo Slim Preston heads up to win Event #14: $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, a rebuy event, for his first bracelet and $195,000. Three other Hall of Famers — Chris Bjorin, Phil Hellmuth and David "Devilfish" Ulliott — also competed at that final table, so shipping it was about more than just getting his first taste of gold. Ivey showed he could beat the best in the business.

Two years after that, though, would be when Ivey really showed he was the present and future of the game. In 2002, Ivey showcased his skills at limit poker in a big way.

Dobin Done in By Linville

Chad_Holloway • Level 32: 16,000-32,000, 4,000 ante

Action folded around to Bryce "bullets91" Linville in the small blind and he moved all in to put the pressure on Harrison "HarrisonD33" Dobin, who called off for 488,163 from the big blind.

Bryce "bullets91" Linville: {9-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Harrison "HarrisonD33" Dobin: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}

It was a flip and Linville took the lead when the {7-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop paired his nine. However, Dobin did flop an up-and-down straight draw.

The {q-Diamonds} turn was of no consequence and neither was the {2-Hearts} river. Dobin missed and hit the rail in 37th place for $2,774.01.

Berkey Collects Massive Pot With Cowboys

Matt Berkey
Matt Berkey

Matt "Berkey11_S4Y" Berkey opened for 72,500 from the hijack and "Kook82" three-bet to 214,000 from the cutoff.

"Kook82": {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Matt "Berkey11_S4Y" Berkey: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Berkey was ahead with his kings and nothing changed after the {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop.

The {q-Diamonds} turn paired "Kook82" but they were still behind and the {10-Diamonds} river was no help ending their tournament.

The Mouth Gobbles Up Fentisov's Remaining Chips

Chad_Holloway • Level 31: 14,000-28,000, 3,500 ante

Viacheslav "Innstillness" Fentisov was automatically all in from the big blind for his last 24,551 and Mike "mouth123" Matusow put him at risk by raising to 56,000 from the cutoff to chase out both the button and small blind.

Viacheslav "Innstillness" Fentisov: {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}
Mike "mouth123" Matusow: {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {q-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and Matusow's pair of kings sent Fentisov out of the tournament in 46th place for $2,340.57.

Gandrow Flushes Wong for Double

Danny Wong
Danny Wong

Danny "Jackdaniels1" Wong open-jammed under the gun for 325,104 and Alexander "PieceOfStick" Gandrow called for less holding 236,614 next to ace.

Danny "Jackdaniels1" Wong: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Alexander "PieceOfStick" Gandrow: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

It was a race with Wong ahead and nothing changed after the {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop.

The {8-Spades} turn gave Wong a set of eights but it also gave Gandrow the nut flush draw which he completed with the {k-Spades} on the river for the double-up.

Stanley "stanman420" Lee Done and Dusted

Chad_Holloway • Level 30: 12,000-24,000, 3,000 ante
Stanley Lee
Stanley Lee

Christopher "BasIle28" Basile raised to 48,000 under the gun and Melissa "PokerDad1960" Schubert called from the button. Stanley "stanman420" Lee then three-bet all in for 432,970 from the small blind, Basile shoved, and Schubert got out of the way.

Christopher "BasIle28" Basile: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Stanley "stanman420" Lee: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Lee was dominated but got some hope when the {8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop delivered him a gutshot straight draw. Unfortunately for him, neither the {k-Clubs} turn nor {8-Clubs} river completed it and Lee exited in 52nd place for $2,340.57.
