How The Million Pound Showdown Started The High Roller Craze

Homer • Level 24: 20,000-40,000, 5,000 ante

High Roller events are all the rage these days but who remembers where they all started? The answer is here in the Vic, which hosted a Million Pound Showdown in 2008 — a million quid guaranteed for a £20,000 entry. You could probably guess who won it. That was the year of Jason Mercier. PokerStars Blog looks back.

Paul Volpe open-shoved for 675,000 on the button, and Talal Shakerchi re-shoved from the small blind, and Fabian Quoss folded from the big blind.

Volpe: {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Shakerchi: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{k-Spades}{a-Hearts}, and Volpe was eliminated in fourth place.

Quoss Doubles Through Volpe

Fabian Quoss
Fabian Quoss

Fabian Quoss opened to 80,000 from UTG/CO for the third time in a row and again Paul Volpe three-bet him, this time it was to 235,000. Talal Shakerchi and Faraz Jaka folded in the blinds and Quoss tanked for a couple of minutes before moving all in. Volpe called.

Quoss: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Volpe: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}

The {10-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{4-Spades} flop gave Quoss a huge draw but the {5-Diamonds} on the turn cut his outs from 14 to just eight. The {A-Clubs} came on the river giving Quoss the nut straight and he doubled up over a million while Volpe is now the short stack.

Sklansky Bucks for Shakerchi

Faraz Jaka opened to 85,000 from the cutoff, Paul Volpe called out of the small blind, and Talal Shakerchi defended his big blind. The flop fell {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs}, both blinds checked, and Jaka fired 110,000. Both Volpe and Shakerchi called.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds}, both players checked, and the {10-Diamonds} completed the board.

Volpe led out for 310,000, Shakerchi quickly called, and Jaka capped his cards. He tanked for the better part of a minute, then tossed in enough orange T25,000 chips to make the call.

Shakerchi turned over {j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for trip sevens, and Volpe flashed a {10-} before mucking. Jaka mucked face down. Shakerchi pulled in the 1.5 million-chip pot, crossing the three million-chip threshold.

Quoss' Heroics End in Failure

Homer • Level 24: 20,000-40,000, 5,000 ante

For the second round in the row, Paul Volpe three-bet Fabian Quoss' cutoff raise from the button. The German had made it 80,000 and Volpe reraised to 200,000 and this time Quoss made the call, having previously folded.

Quoss check-called a bet of 130,000 on the {9-Spades}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop and then another 190,000 on the {3-Spades} turn. Both players checked the {6-Spades} river and Volpe showed {Q-Spades}{8-Spades}. Quoss flashed {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} having been ahead until the river.

Talal Shakerchi is not afraid to put his chips in and match the rest of the players for aggression. He fired bets of 105,000 and 185,000 against Faraz Jaka on the flop and turn of a {10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} board before both checked the river.

Shakerchi showed {5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for the rivered baby flush to retake the chip lead.

Fortunate Double for Volpe

[user101598] • Level 24: 20,000-40,000, 5,000 ante

On one of the first hands of four-handed play, Talal Shakerchi opened to 80,000 from the cutoff. Faraz Jaka called on the button, and Paul Volpe squeezed, moving all in for 629,000 in the big blind. Shakerchi quickly folded, then Jaka instantly called.

Jaka: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Volpe: {a-Spades}{7-Spades}

The {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop gave Volpe a leading pair of sevens, and they held as the turn and river came {10-Hearts}, {2-Clubs} respectively. Volpe doubled to over 1.2 million chips, while Jaka is still very healthy with roughly two million.
