Michael Zhang Wins GUKPT London Midi Main Event

Michael Zhang

The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) crowned its first champion for more than a year this weekend when Michael Zhang took down the GUKPT London Mid Main Event. Zhang, who won the GUKPT London Main Event in 2017, walked away with £54,780 for his efforts.

Zhang was one of 414 entrants in the £500 buy-in Midi Main Event, a turnout that shows how much high-class poker has been missed by the British poker community. The top 38 finishers won a slice of the chunky prize pool, a min-cash weighing in at £1,010.

Such luminaries as Laurence Houghton, Jamie Nixon, Jack Hardcastle, and Daniel Moran cashed in the event, the latter falling in tenth place to burst the money bubble.

Maziar Pouladpour was the first of the nine finalists to head to the cashier’s desk. His ninth-place finish resulting in a £3,650 score. Vicent Meli (£4,470), Tom Laghzaoui (£5,270), and Stephen O’Keefe (£6,700) followed suit, before Terry Jordon (£9,330) saw his tournament end in fifth place having led for the majority of proceedings.

Paul Rigg fell in fourth and walked away with a £14,000 haul, the first five-figure score of the evening. Hector Berry then crashed and burned in third for £22,310, which left Zhang heads-up against Alex Whitenstall.

No disrespect to Whitenstall but the writing was on the wall, not least because Zhang has almost $3.5 million in live earnings, and is used to playing in tournaments with buy-ins up to €50,000. Zhang finished his opponent to secure the £54,780 top prize, leaving Whitenstall to collect a still very respectable £36,720.
