2017 GUKPT Goliath Could Smash Attendance Record for a Poker Tournament

GUKPT Goliath

The 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event attracted a staggering 7,221 players to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, making it the third-largest WSOP Main Event of all-time and now the 2017 GUKPT Goliath looks set to smash the attendance record for a poker tournament held in Europe. The poker economy once again looks in a fine bill of health.

When the Goliath ran in 2012, the 1,954 entrants meant the £200,000 guarantee was not met but the tournament was a huge hit with everyone who took part thanks to giving them the opportunity to play in a WSOP-like event for only a £120 outlay.

The following year, 2,568 players turned out for the Goliath, an increase of 31.42 percent. It was a similar story in 2014 when the number of entrants increased by 32.17 percent to 3,394 before an impressive 4,210 bought into the 2015 edition of Goliath, another increase of 24.04 percent.

Last year was the largest-ever Goliath tournament courtesy of 5,232 players buying in over the course of the several starting flights, another increase of 24.28 percent. Even if the attendance for the 2017 Goliath, which kicks off Jul. 29, only climbs by 10 percent, there will be more than 5,750 players and a £575,500 prize pool on offer. According to the early analysis by GUKPT, sponsors of the Goliath, a figure of more than 5,000 players looks likely.

This year’s Goliath features seven starting flights with each of those Day 1s playing 16 levels of 40-minutes each, which means each flight should end at approximately 12:40 a.m. after breaks are taken into consideration.

Players sit down with a generous helping of 25,000 tournament chips and blinds start as low as 25/50. Re-entry is permitted on twice each day while the three-hour late registration period is open.

It isn’t only the huge Goliath tournament on the schedule for the festival because there are several side events taking place, plus events run by both RedTooth Poker and the excellent Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT). The full schedule can be seen in the table below.
