UK & Ireland Global Poker Index: Salter and Wilson on Top

Jack Salter and Dan Wilson
  • Jack Salter tops the UK Global Poker Index with Dan Wilson leading the way in Ireland.

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. For a look at the entire list, visit the official GPI website. Here's a look at the UK and Irish rankings as of May 24.

Jack Salter is the current number one ranked player in the United Kingdom and he enjoys a narrow advantage over second-placed Niall Farrell. Salter travels the world playing live poker tournaments and was recently in Monaco for the PokerStars Championship where he won the €15,200 Hyper Turbo event for €88,200 and also the €2,200 PokerStars National High Roller for €142,600.

Farrell can boast of a recent six-figure score, too. The popular Scottish grinder finished sixth in the C$5,300 partypoker Million North America for C$160,000 and is now only 38.82 points away from Salter at the summit of the rankings.

Third place currently belongs to Stephen Chidwick who navigated his way to a sixth place finish in the partypoker MILLIONS at Dusk Till Dawn in late April and won £150,000 to take his lifetime winnings past the $7.5 million barrier.

Making up the top 10 players are best friends Ben Heath and Charlie Carrel, satellite specialist Tom Hall, Max Silver, Louis Salter (brother of Jack), Kully Sidhu and high roller regular Paul Newey.

Dan Wilson tops the Irish rankings when it comes to live poker. Wilson, a former Irish Open champion, is currently second in the online poker rankings, although he has dominated the number one spot for large parts of 2017.

Gavin O’Rourke is in second place, partly because of a quartet of cashes in Monaco during the PokerStars Championship and a cash in the partypoker MILLIONS at Dusk Till Dawn.

Former Irish number one Dermot Blain occupies third place. Blain won a €1,100 pot-limit Omaha eight-max event in Monaco for €15,530 and cashed in a €2,200 no-limit hold’em side event.

Rounding out the top 10 are Marc MacDonnell, Chris Dowling, Mark Reilly, Peter Murphy, Dara O’Kearney, Conor Beresford and Toby Joyce.

With dozens of live events taking place in the UK and Ireland over the next month plus the 2017 World Series of Poker starting in Las Vegas, players in the top 20 of each leaderboard have ample opportunity to earn themselves some points and climb up the rankings. If and when this happens, UK & Ireland PokerNews will let you know.
