UK & Ireland Online Poker Rankings: Leonard and Wilson Start 2017 on Top

Patrick Leonard
  • Patrick Leonard returns to the number one spot in the UK online poker rankings.

  • Dan Wilson starts 2017 as Ireland's number one online poker tournament player.

The New Year is almost a week old and our friends over at PocketFives.com have updated their vast database and revealed the first online poker rankings of 2017.

Starting 2017 on top of the pile in the United Kingdom is the Partypoker ambassador Patrick Leonard who narrowly edged out Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford. Leonard, a former world number one, was the runner-up in the PokerStars Sunday Supersonic on Christmas Day for $18,077 and also finished fifth in the 888poker Whale tournament for $4,475. The Hungary-based grinder also collected $4,957 by finishing second in the $320 NLHE 6-Max at PokerStars on New Year’s Day.

Beresford only took three days of the New year to register his first outright victory, taking down the PokerStars Big $215 on Jan. 3 for a cool $12,507. The Holland-based grinder who hails from York now has more than $3.6 million in online tournament winnings.

Brighton’s Phil “philroyal888” Mighall currently occupies fourth place in the UK standings despite a string of impressive results since the turn of the year. Mighall has reached eight final tables in the opening week of 2017 with his biggest cash being for $4,691, his reward for being the runner-up in the PokerStars $109 NLHE 6-Max Hyper-Turbo.

Returning to the top 10 this week is Rick “TheClaimer” Trigg courtesy of winning both the $5,000 Thunder 6-Max at 888poker for $1,703 and the Hot $162 at PokerStars for $6,571. Also in the winner’s circle was Owain “sngwonder” Carey who took down the Big $33 at PokerStars and scooped $4,672.

Ireland’s Grinders Enjoy Holidays Success

The Festive period is usually a time for relaxing and enjoying too much food and drink, but perhaps the Irish grinders did not receive that message judging by some of the excellent poker results they put out over Christmas.

Ireland’s number one, and the world’s number 40, Dan “NukeTheFish!” Wilson registered his first victory of 2017 when he won the $109 NLHE at PokerStars for $2,199 on Jan. 5. On Boxing Day, James “Jaymo” Noonan gave himself a superb Christmas present by winning the Sunday Special at Americas Cardroom for $22,425 which is his fifth largest online cash of his career.

Toby “JobyToyce” Joyce had a trio of four-figure cashes, including one worth $9,715. The almost five-figure score was Joyce’s reward for winning the Winamax XTREM tournament on New Year’s Day.

“FoxyLisa” was also busy over Christmas, busy winning a Hot $215 at PokerStars for $20,341 on Boxing Day while Marc “sluglife” Macdonnell finished third in the Hot $109 at PokerStars for $9,372 on Dec. 27.

There is a new name in the Irish top 20 this week, that of Gary “relaxnspew” McGinty. The Meath-based player collected $10,616 for his runner-up finish in the Christmas Day edition of the Big $55 and on Jan. 5 was the third place finisher in the Thursday Thrill and banked $24,859. McGinty is now 16th in Ireland and a career-high of 746 in the world.
