The first Sunday of the New Year was a relatively quiet one, which was to be expected as it fell on January 1, 2017, a day where both poker and non-poker players were perhaps recovering from overindulging during the previous night’s celebrations.
Despite a few fuzzy heads and tired eyes, there were a handful of decent scores enjoyed by online poker tournament grinders who call the United Kingdom and Ireland home.
The players known as “jimbojiff” emerged victorious in the $215 Sunday Warm-Up at PokerStars, banking a cool $46,996.77 after topping a field of 1,543 in the early hours of January 2. While jimbojiff was navigating his way to a substantial five-figure score, “redgame09” was falling short of winning the $109 Sunday Starter, finishing in third-place for $2,869.06.
Another player with a Union Jack next to their alias was “trolls180” and they finished in third place in the $109 Sunday Kickoff, securing an $8,137.93 payout, while UK-based German superstar Dominik “Bounatirou” Nitsche finished fifth in the $1,050 Sunday Grand for $15,292.22.
Across to 888poker now where “dioszilla” reached the final table of the $50,000 Baby Whale before busting in eighth-place for a $1,995 addition to their bankroll, and where “sheeeeeeeet” was the runner-up in the $40,000 Turbo Mega Deep, turning $215 into $6,200.
In the $50,000 Sunday Challenge, there were two British players at the final table. Richard “ChipsFool” Hoadley fell in ninth-place and banked $1,021.59 for their $90 investment, with “888444222” dancing their way to the $6,308.05 third-place prize.
At Partypoker, the $100,000 Super High Roller ran and saw 49 players pony up the $2,600 buy-in. Oliver “ThreeBunPass” Price seems to cash in this tournament at will and this week was no different with the Londoner finishing in seventh-place and winning $5,512.50.
One of partypoker’s other popular tournaments is the Weigh-In, which had a $40,000 guaranteed prize pool on Sunday. It was one by a player calling themselves “WilliamKassouf” but we cannot confirm if it is the actual talkative Brit or just one of his many fans. Whoever it was turned $109 into $8,398.09.
January has the potential to be huge for players from the UK and Ireland as they attempt to kick off the New Year in style. This can be helped by the upcoming Super XL Series at 888poker that kicks off on January 19 and guarantees at least $5,000,000 will be won by the time the final tournament crowns its champion.
