The final UKIPT in the tour’s history got underway at the Genting Casino Star City, Birmingham on Thursday afternoon and attracted a compact field of 58 players, with 33 of those starters navigating their way through to Saturday’s Day 2.
Leading the way after Day 1a after crushing all that took him on is Spain’s Breixo Pena who bagged up an impressive stack of 112,000 chips.
UKIPT Birmingham Day 1a Top 10 Chip Counts
Pena already has $56,788 in live tournament winnings and is on course to add to that total judging by the impressive start he’s made in Birmingham. At this year’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, Pena ran deep in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event, finishing 35th from 1,860 entries to scoop $10,514, and cashed twice in two other Las Vegas tournaments.
Hot on Pena’s heels here in the UK is Teymour Sabet on 82,100 chips, but also in the top 10 chips counts at the close of play is Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker on 63,100, enough for eighth-place, with European Poker Tour Barcelona runner-up Steve Warburton ending the night with 56,400 chips and 10th place on the leaderboard.
Day 2 looks set to be shark infested with the likes of Erik van den Berg (53,300), Adam Owen (47,200), Sam Grafton (43,600), Ben Jackson (34,900), Jonathan Gill (29,800), Alex Spencer (29,300), and Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody (21,000) all progressing to it.
Friday sees two starting flight take place, Day 1b should be by far the busiest of the two because Day 1c is only open to those who bust on Day 1a or Day 1b, meaning the likes of Partypoker pro Natalia Breviglieri, James Mitchell, Ben Dobson, and Yucel Eminolgu can have a second bite of the cherry having fallen on the opening day’s play.
