Sunday Briefing: Ian Simpson Wins the $400K GPPT Online Leg

Ian Simpson

  • Ian Simpson was among the big winners this weekend thanks to taking down the $400,000 GPPT Online leg at partypoker.

With the 2016 World Series of Poker in full swing over in sunny Las Vegas, it would be easy to forget that the online poker world is still bustling, and online grinders are still plying their trade at the virtual felt.

One such grinder is Ian Simpson, the former Irish Open champion, who took part in the $400,000 guaranteed Grand Prix Poker Tour Online leg at partypoker over the weekend. Not only did he take part, but he took the tournament down, bagging a cool $51,891 for his $109 investment, which was a superb result in its own right, but there was an added extra.

As Simpson is from the United Kingdom, his win qualified him for a special $25,000 bonus thrown into the mix by partypoker and Dusk Till Dawn. Simpson can now choose to have first class return flights to Vegas, a suite in the Bellagio, and $10,000 of poker buy-ins, or decided if he wants the cash or equivalent package for the Caribbean Poker Party in November. Not a bad night’s work by any stretch of the imagination.

Joining Simpson on the final table was Jack “LUMBERJ4CK85” Ellwood who bust in third place for a $20,091 score.

Also in the winner’s circle at partypoker on Sunday was Ireland’s Gary “garyt20” Thompson, who walked away with the $24,150.15 first place prize in the $150,000 guaranteed Main Event.

Over at PokerStars, “BuyMyLunch” will be able to afford several meals after finishing fourth in the Sunday Million for a $64,347.90 score. Irish player “Noogaii” fell one place earlier and added $48,132 to their bankroll.

In the Sunday Warm-Up, “tennisfan 14” fell one place short of winning, but the $42,408 runner-up prize will go some way to consoling them, while in the Big $109, “KennedyPK97” finished as the bridesmaid and banked $18,610.25.

Another British player helped themselves to a runner-up prize, this time “donkey310” finished second in the Super-Sized Sunday progressive KO for $23,220.32 after a three-way chop, with “PreyOnDaLine” collecting $10,627.50 for their seventh place finish in the Sunday Grand.

Elliott “elliottpet” Peterman added $15,521.94 to his lifetime winnings courtesy of a runner-up finish in the Sunday Cooldown to wrap up the biggest results at PokerStars this weekend.

The best result for one of our players at 888poker this Sunday was that of “4bettor” who won the $80,000 Sunday Challenge for a cool $16,880.62. Another 888 score weighed in at $4,212, which was “g.s.p.888’s” reward for their seventh place finish in the $100,000 Mega Deep.

Lastly, shout outs to Conor “grandma1954” Beresford and “r4ms85” who finished fifth and eighth in the $80,000 Baby Whale for scores of $5,574.60 and $2,347.20 respectively.
