The popularity of fantasy sports continues to rise, and now fantasy poker is being given a shot in the arm thanks to a brand new, free-to-play game called Staker.
Staker is the brainchild of the boffins behind the Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT), one of the longest-running poker tours in the United Kingdom. The game immerses you in the world of poker staking, and gives you the chance to win real-money prizes for no financial risk.
When you create your free Staker account, you are given a virtual bankroll the value of one buy-in per event on the tour, such as a stop on the European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour, or the World Series of Poker, and you can invest this bankroll in players who you think will excel in each event.
For example, if you choose the $50,000 Poker Players Championship as an event you want to use Staker for, you receive $50,000 which you can put on a single player, or several players who you think will enter the event and perform well. If they reach the money places, you earn a percentage of their cash, so if you invest all $50,000 in the eventual champion and they win $2,000,000, you win a virtual $2,000,000. If you invested $10,000 in the eventual champion, you’d win $400,000.
The top 10 stakers in each event win a tournament ticket worth between £5 and £30, while the top 10 overall stakers when the WSOP Main Event’s November Nine are decided on July 17 win a seat to the Grosvenor Goliath tournament, the largest tournament – in terms of entrants – in the world outside Las Vegas, worth £120.
This exciting game makes following the live updates, and watching streams, an altogether different experience because you will have a piece of at least one of the players involved in the action. Do you need Phil Hellmuth to reach the final table in order to propel you to the top of the leader board, or have you chosen a dark horse in the Crazy Eights tournament who nobody else has picked, giving you the opportunity to turn your tiny investment into a wheelbarrow full of cash?
The skill comes from your research of each event and the players you think will compete in the tournament. At the recent World Poker Tour National Nottingham High Roller, a total of 106 stakes were placed across 47 unique players, with 17 of those stakes invested in Sam Trickett who didn’t even play the event! However, one astute staker chose to invest £400 (20%) of their bankroll in Enzo Del Piero, who went on to finish second for £27,000. If you can pull a similar player out of the hat, you stand a significant chance of winning yourself some awesome prizes.
Speaking about Staker, Des Duffy, CEO of APAT and former Head of Poker for Sky Poker and Everest Poker, said: “Staker's a fun game that will add some extra excitement every time you read a live update, or view a stream. We've got an interesting vision for what we believe Staker can achieve in the market, and that will become clear as we roll out future versions.”
Check out Staker today and see if you invest your way to a Grosvenor Goliath seat.
