Reading Gears Up for GPS and GUKPT Events
Reading may not be the first place that springs to mind when asked to think of a poker hotbed, but for the next week or so it is exactly that as it welcomes the Genting Poker Series (GPS) and the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT).
The GPS Reading is one of the tour’s “mini” events, meaning the buy-in is £220 instead of £440. For their £220, players have a choice of three starting flights, receive 25,000 chips, play to a 40-minute clock, and at least £35,000 is guaranteed to be shared among those finishing in the money.
When there was last a GPS Mini in Reading, Jason Willis topped a field of 282 to win £15,280 of the £56,400 prize pool, plus each of the players at the nine-handed final table receive £440 GPS seats.

Week of Poker Action at the GUKPT Reading Festival
The Grosvenor Casino Reading South is the venue for the 2016 GUKPT Reading festival, which features a £100,000 guaranteed Main Event.
£550 is the buy-in for the GUKPT Reading Main Event, which runs from Thursday 21 April through to Sunday 24 April, and should see a sizable crowd turn out for it if previous editions are anything to base our judgement on.
GUKPT Reading made its debut in 2013 and saw 165 players exchange £500+£50 for the chance to become a GUKPT champion. Its final table housed the likes of David Lloyd, Timothy “Tim Tim” Timotheuo, Ellie Biessek and Jeff Kimber, the latter being runner-up to eventual winner James Martin.
A much larger crowd of 268 players descended on the casino for the 2014 edition of the GUKPT Main Event, creating a £134,000 prize pool as they did so. Again, the final table was a star-studded affair with the likes of Alberto Sapiano, Haresh Thaker, and veteran Willie Tann all being present and correct.
The winner was the talented Paul vas Nunes who scooped £29,200 after a couple of deals in the latter stages diluted the original first place prize.
Raul Martinez won the 2015 edition of GUKPT Reading, winning £25,250 after a four-handed chop.
