Yani Yanev had a day to remember at the 2016 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Manchester Main Event Day 1a thanks to somehow turning his 20,000 starting stack into a colossal 217,100 over the course of nine 60-minute levels.
Yanev, who was the runner-up in the 2015 WPT500 UK edition for £90,000, has almost twice the number of chips as second-placed Athir Ali, who bagged up 122,800 chips at the close of play. Yanev finished second to Eirimas Livonas in the 2013 GUKPT Didsbury Main Event and if he continues this tournament how he has started it then he could be on for a similar result.
Eighty-six players bought in on Day 1a of the £1,000+£100 buy-in event, but only 32 progressed to Saturday’s Day 2. Among those safely through was former European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona champion Tom Middleton who finished his starting flight with 97,600 chips, enough for third place on the overnight leader board.
Other notables to look out for on Day 2 include Paul Jackson (82,300), Matt Davenport (80,600), Mick Fletcher (37,500), Steven Warburton (30,100), Ben Jackson (29,500) and John Conroy (29,000).
Some of those players unable to navigate their way through the Day 1a field, but can still play on Day 1b, include Andrew Hulme, Charles Chattha, Jonathan Beck, Kevin Houghton, and Luke Reeves.
2016 GUKPT Manchester Day 1a Top 10 Chip Counts
More than 100 players are expected to buy in over the course of Day 1b, with the money places almost certainly being hit during Saturday’s Day 2 with the champion of the 2016 GUKPT Manchester Main Event will be crowned on Sunday.
