Forty-six of the 123 Day 1b entries progressed to Saturday’s Day 2, none of them doing so with more chips that Pedro Guerrero who bagged up 159,900 chips as play ended to claim the overnight chip lead. It’s common for there to be a runaway chip leader in poker tournaments, but not in this one as four of Guerrero’s opponents finished the night with more than 130,000 chips.

Lewis Smith should be pleased with his day after bagging up 144,500 chips, with Sean Rigley being equally as happy with his 142,500 stack. Wai Leung also finished Day 1b with 142,500 chips while Chin Chai Koh, better-known as Chinese Frankie, returns to the felt on Saturday with a healthy stack of 134,400 chips.

With the Main Event featuring a £100,000 guaranteed prize pool for the £400+£40 entry it was no surprise to see some stellar names among the Day 1b field.

Matt Davenport’s 110,700 stack is large enough to sit him eighth in the overnight chip counts, with John Eames lurking outside the top 10 with 79,500 chips. Waheed “Wadey” Ashraf (79,000), Dan Charlton (68,700), Tom Ambler (70,600), Simon Higgins (62,700), Paul “The Rock” Romain (52,500), and Alex Spencer (44,100) are some of the other big names to make it through their opening flight.

Day 1c is expected to be around 200 players deep thanks in part to players who bust on Day 1b being able to fire another bullet. We’d expect to see the likes of Sam MacDonald, Rick Trigg, and Tom Haney to re-enter plus a whole host of fresh faces ready to begin their quest to become the 2015 GPS Sheffield champion.
