When PokerStars announced the launch of its Common Cents tournament series last week, 14 tournaments with buy-ins of less than $1 but with combined guarantees of $250,000, it was obvious that some of the field sizes would be huge.
The opening event, the Common Cents Kick-Off, cost a mere $0.01 to enter yet featured a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool, which attracted a record-breaking crowd to the PokerStars virtual felt. By the time late registration was over, a staggering 253,698 players had bought in and the record for the largest online poker tournament in history was broken, a record that PokerStars held previously.
While the tournament itself overlaid by more than $97,000, it was more of a PR exercise by the world’s largest online poker site, and one that has hit the headlines around the globe. The eventual champion, Austria’s “DaDumon,” walked away with $10,000.00 for his one cent investment, which is almost certainly the best Return On Investment (ROI) in the history of poker if not any other walk of life.
Amazingly, due to the turbo blind structure, the tournament only took six hours 38 minutes from start to finish!
Since this opening event, three more Common Cents tournaments have been completed with combined attendances of 87,517 and with 10 more events running before October 11, including a $0.99 buy-in $25,000 guaranteed Main Event, there is a chance that PokerStars will break its own record once again.

PokerStars Breaks Own Attendance Record
PokerStars already held the record for the largest online poker tournament in history when 225,000 players took part in the aptly named World Record Tournament, part of the 100 Billion Hands Celebration. On that occasion, Russia’s “Mr.SlavaPro” emerged victorious and claimed the $25,000 first place prize for his $1 investment.
