Day 1a of the 2015 MPN Poker Tour Dublin Main Event, part of the two-week Dublin Poker Invasion, kicked off on Wednesday afternoon and saw 108 players exchange €500 for 25,000 tournament chips and the chance to become a poker champion in Ireland.
Top talent such as Andy Black, Conor O’Driscoll, Eoin Starr and the 888poker Live Local Series Dublin winner Colm Hanlon were among those 108 starters, but all failed to progress at the first attempt; Black actually bust from the Main Event three times!
MPN Poker Tour Dublin Day 1a Top 10 Chip Counts
Thirty-three players did manage to punch their tickets for some Day 2 action and it is Michael Conaty who is most pleased out of those players thanks to bagging up 258,700 chips at the close of play, enough to earn him the title of overnight chip leader.
Val Zan was the only other player to break through the 200,000 chip barrier, finishing with a healthy 228,600 chips.
Among the 33 survivors were some of Irish poker’s most familiar faces, one such face belonging to Mark Reilly, the man ranked 14th in Ireland by the Global Poker Index. Reilly finished Day 1a with 167,700 chips, placing him third in the overnight chip counts.
Also through is Marc “Sluglife” MacDonnell and his 162,700 stack. MacDonnell, ranked first in Ireland for live poker tournaments, narrowly missed out on a World Series of Poker bracelet this year when he finished as runner-up in Event #6, a result that banked him $155,876.
Further down the chips counts you’ll find Andrew Grimason (65,600), tournament director extraordinaire JP McCann (64,800), Nicholas Newport (29,000), and the satellite king Dara O’Kearney (28,800).
Day 1b of the so-called Irish Poker Cup begins at 2:00pm on September 3 and continues until 12 levels are completed. Can anyone match Conaty’s impressive total? Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Friday to find out.
