When the PokerStars UKIPT last stopped in Bristol in Season 3 (2012) it spent the week enjoying the hospitality of the Gala Harbourship Casino. This time around, two-and-a-half year later, it has a new abode for the duration of its festival, namely The Rainbow Casino.
The change of venue didn’t put players off from making the trip to compete in the £700+£70 buy-in Main Event as 140 players turned up on Day 1a on Thursday afternoon. By the time 12 levels of intense poker were done and dusted, all but 39 players had fallen by the wayside, those 39 being led by Javed Ullah.
Ullah bagged up 224,700 chips at the close of play and will be quietly confident of securing his second UKIPT cash, having finished 39th in Season 4’s London Main Event, a result that awarded £2,740.

Only one other player managed to finish Day 1a with more than 200,000 chips, that player being Leslie Packer (212,700), a local player who will no doubt be well supported in Bristol if he manages to build on his early success.
A number of familiar faces are in the chasing pack and are ones to watch when Day 2 commences on Saturday afternoon.
Benjamin Winsor, winner of the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Walsall Main Event, bagged up a healthy 175,600 stack, while the popular Ryan Spittles returns on Day 2 with 171,100 betting tokens at his disposal.
Others who have to book at least an extra night’s accommodation include David Lloyd (91,300), Neil Raine (78,800), Christopher Day (73,100), Supernova Elite Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford (71,200), James Atkin (57,700), the man who is crushing online tournaments at the moment Daniel Carter (43,300), Paul Vas Nunes (33,500), World Series of Poker bracelet winner Gerald Ringe (33,400) and Ireland’s David Lappin (20,000).
The side events taking place this weekend will be slightly more shark infested due to a host of stars failing to progress from the Main Event.
Fraser MacIntyre, Fergal Nealon, Oliver Price, Dara O’Kearney, Chris Gordon, Ben Martin, and Kuljinder Sidhu were just a handful of top poker talent who fell at various points during Day 1a proceedings.
Day 1b kicks off at midday on Friday 7 August. Set to battle it out at The Rainbow Casino’s felt are Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody, his Team Online counterpart Alex Millar, and the hot-running Ludovic Geilich.
