Three of the 2015 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath’s seven starting flights are complete and already it looks like the tournament’s £250,000 guarantee is going to be blown out of the water as there are already 1,304 entrants with the busiest Day 1’s to come.
Day 1a opened to the poker loving public on Saturday 8 August and saw a crowd of 492 head to the Ricoh Arena, home of Coventry City football club, to begin their quest to slay the Goliath. This quest ended prematurely for all but 60 of them, although those who bust have the opportunity to re-enter if they fancy throwing another £120 at the giant event.
Matt Pearson fared the best on Day 1a, finishing the night with a healthy stack containing 506,000 chips.
Pearson’s huge stack was eclipsed by two players on Day 1b, a start day that ended with 58 of the 469 entries progressing to Day 2.
Mark Hester, a regular in live tournaments in the Midlands, bagged up exactly 600,000 chips but was pipped to the post for the chip lead by another familiar face, that of Sunny Mistri who returns for Day 2 action with 660,000 chips.
Mistri has almost $150,000 in live tournament winnings and is probably one of the more experienced players in the 2015 Goliath, a tournament renowned for attracting large numbers of recreational poker players wanting to take a shot at the big time.
Day 1c was expected to be one of the quieter days with it being Monday and the organisers estimated only 250 entries would be processed. Whoever backed the over is now quids in because the total attendance figure was 343, of which 48 players made it through. The third day’s chip leader was Steve Watkins courtesy of his 455,000 stack.
