The Casino Marbella was packed to the rafters on Wednesday as the third edition of the UKIPT Marbella Main Event began. An impressive crowd of 349 players chose Day 1a to begin their quest for glory in Spain although that quest ended abruptly for more than half of them, with only 136 players progressing to Day 2 after 10 levels were completed.
As has been the case in the previous two UKIPT Marbella Main Events, there were plenty of British players in the field, although only a handful of them finished the night with chips needing bagging.
Jonathan Matthews was the highest placed Brit courtesy of his 122,900 chips while Mark James (120,000), John Symes (58,600), Dominic Evans (53,300), Seun Oluwole (46,200), Richard Pearson (44,800), Scott Franklin (44,400), Alon Lang (37,600), Christopher Howden (29,400), Tom Wiesner (23,000), Ireland’s Patrick Clarke (22,400), Dominic Mulhall (17,900), and Jonathan Schuman (12,600) being the ones who safely navigated their way through to Friday’s Day 2.
Some of the more notable British and Irish players who bust during the first starting flight included Sam MacDonald, Richard Hawes, David Lloyd, Neil Raine, two-time Sunday Million champion Neil Strike, Dominic Mahoney, Tom Dunwoodie, and David Lappin.

The side events at the festival are likely to be more shark-infested thanks to Team PokerStars Pro Leo Margets, UKIPT London winner Rapinder Cheema, Morten Mortensen, Konstantinos Nanos, Florian Langmann and the aforementioned British bustouts.
Day 1b commences at noon local time and hopes are high for a combined attendance of 800. Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews during the UKIPT Marbella Main Event for daily recaps of the action.
