50 Jobs Lost As Grosvenor Casino Closes

Grosvenor Casino in Osborne Road, Southsea

As many as 50 jobs are to be lost when the Grosvenor Casino in Osborne Road, Southsea, closes its doors for the final time on August 9.

The casino staff are being made redundant and will receive a week’s wage for every year they have been employed by the casino, although workers are being encouraged to apply for jobs elsewhere in the company, especially the neighbouring Portsmouth casino in Gunwharf Quays.

Rank Group, who own the Grosvenor Casino chain, are yet to comment on the closure or what the plans for the building are.

Councillor Linda Symes, said to the local newspaper, The News that she fears for the iconic building:

“It’s such a great shame. It’s a great piece of Southsea history. It’s had a long history there. They used to have prestigious dinners and weddings and ballroom dancing there. It’s beautiful inside. I struggle to see how anyone could convert it. The thought of it being pulled down is horrendous.

“I think people will do down to Gunwharf. A lot of people do use it and it will be missed but it’s not as valuable as the building would be if that got knocked down.”

Grosvenor are one of five casino operators to have its large casino application approved by nearby Southampton’s council. Grosvenor face stiff competition from Aspers, Genting, Global Gaming Ventures and Kymeira Casino for the right to build a so-called “Super Casino” at Southampton’s Royal Pier, LeisureWorld or the Watermark WestQuay.
