After months of speculation, the world’s largest online poker site, PokerStars, has launched its sports betting operation in the United Kingdom with players now able to place bets on a variety of markets via the PokerStars 7 software.
Currently, PokerStars is only accepting bets on football, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, rugby union, handball and volleyball but these markets are in-depth and there’s a banner promising more sports are coming very soon.
At first glance, PokerStars odds seem comparable to more established bookmakers such as the Betfair sportsbook and British gambling giant William Hill. For example, when looking at Saturday’s F.A. Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa, the Scottish Cup with Falkrik versus Inverness and the Serie A clash between Verona and Juventus, you see the following odds:
|Site||Arsenal win||Draw||Aston Villa Win|
PokerStars players wanting to place bets can do so via the PokerStars 7 client on their desktop, Android and iOS powered devices using their PokerStars accounts and balances. There is no need to create a new account as their current PokerStars account gives access to the full suite of games including poker, casino games and now sports betting.
It will be interesting to see how PokerStars’ sports betting operation grows in the coming weeks and months and whether or not they start limiting players’ action as most sportsbooks do, especially those of big winning players.
PokerStars’ owner, Amaya Gaming, is part of a joint bid with GVC Holdings for fellow online gambling entity bwinparty digital plc which owns the large online sportsbook bwin. Amaya’s plans for bwinparty, should its bid be successful, are thought to revolve around the partypoker operation and its New Jersey license in particular, but perhaps now it could find plenty of good use for the bwin sportsbook?
