Colin Wu turned back the clock at the 2015 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Edinburgh Main Event on Thursday as he blitzed his way through the field to end the first starting flight as the tournament’s chip leader.
Wu was a regular on the GUKPT circuit during the tour’s infancy and tore up the felts. In 2009, Wu won a £300+£30 side event at the Newcastle stop for what’s still his career-best score of £29,600 and followed that impressive result up by winning the corresponding Tournament of Champions at the end of that season for a further £25,000.
Now that Wu has accumulated a huge stack of 207,400 chips, he’ll be quietly confident of yet another deep run in a GUKPT Main Event and has done his chances of adding a third GUKPT final table to his poker CV.
Three other players ended Day 1a of the £500+£50 buy-in Main Event with six-figure stacks, that trio being Gary Bertram (140,700), Alastair Patrick (130,600) and Stephen Wood (101,000).
Lurking outside of the 100,000 club is Allan Peers who bagged up 87,200 chips at the close of play. If you follow our Sunday Briefing reports you’ll no doubt have come across Peers’ name before. He is known as “Bigdaft” at PokerStars and “GRANDAD_BAZ” at partypoker and has career winnings of almost $1.7 million.
Those aforementioned players will be joined by some strong players on Saturday’s Day 2. Among the 22 who progressed from the initial 71 entries are the likes of David Vamplew (50,000), Bolton Wanderers fan Lee Taylor (43,100), reigning GUKPT Edinburgh champion Andrew Teng (35,400), and Ross “RLOG” Loggie (13,400).
2015 GUKPT Edinburgh Day 1a Top 10 Chip Counts
Day 1b requires a total of 129 entries in order to cover the guarantee, a figure that is sure to be helped by some players taking advantage of the re-entry format. Top poker talent such as Alan Gold, James Rann, Ludovic Geilich, Andrew Hills, Robbie Bull, Makka Hussain and Paul McTaggart are almost guaranteed to be heading back to the casino on Friday afternoon to continue their quest for some GUKPT silverware.
