A record breaking field of 308 players descended on the Grosvenor G Casino inside the Ricoh Arena, Coventry for Day 1a of the 2015 UK Student Poker Championships (UKSPC).
There were an astonishing 224 entrants on Day 1a, with 84 rebuys, almost doubling last year’s Day 1a total and making up 56% of the 2014 UKSPC Main Event's total attendance — which itself was a record-breaking 579 — with two more start day's left to play. Players from universities across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom were present and correct, including UCLan, Southampton, Plymouth, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Kent and many more.
As if bragging rights among your peers wasn't incentive enough to top the Day 1a chip counts, the Day 1a chipleader was rewarded with a £100 bar tab, so there was a sudden rush towards the end of the day to find out how much the largest stack was. When the dust had settled, the mantel of chip leader rested on Cardiff University’s Charles Norman, who bagged up an impressive 201,200 chips.
Sixty-one players progressed from the opening starting flight and they return on Saturday to continue their quest for glory.
Thursday sees not only the Main Event's Day 1b take place, but also the start of the eagerly anticipated £110 buy-in High Roller, so the casino will be full to bursting once again.
The 2014 edition of the UKSPC High Roller saw 155 entries taken in total and they were all outlasted by Southampton University's Simon Priddis who also won the same event in 2013. Priddis collected £3,230 (after a three-way chop) and we would be surprised if he didn't make the journey to the Midlands in attempt to defend the title that has been his for the past two years.
