Genting Newcastle Forth Street is the venue for 2015 Genting Poker Series’ third leg where a bumper crowd of poker players are expected over the next few days.
The £440 buy-in GPS Newcastle Main Event runs from April 8 through to April 12 and sees a £100,000 guaranteed prize pool up for grabs. Day 1a, the first of three starting flights, takes place at Genting Poker’s online operation and sees players start with 25,000 chips and play to 24-minute blinds, while subsequent start days take place in the actual casino where entrants sit with the same 25,000 starting stack but enjoy lengthier 60-minute blind levels.
Newcastle didn’t host a GPS during the tour’s debut season, but was well received when it appeared on the 2013 schedule. Ellie Biessek made poker history by outlasting a field of 400 and winning the £38,620 first place prize, becoming the first and only female winner of the GPS Main Event so far.
Other winners from that week’s action were Dominic Mahoney, Amy Mahrenholz, Wayne Thomas and Jeff Smith.
Timothy Chung won the 2014 Main Event, besting a talented final table that saw the likes of Tom Brady, Keith “The Camel” Hawkins, Dusk Till Dawn owner Robert Yong, Willie Tann and Brett Angell fall short of GPS glory.
