Sunday Briefing: Keith Johnson Wins the IPT High Roller For €144.5K

Keith Johnson

With some of the United Kingdom and Ireland’s biggest names heading to Malta for the European Poker Tour festival we didn’t think there would be a whole lot to shout about in this edition of the Sunday Briefing. We were wrong because a quick glance at the results of the Sunday Majors and the side events at EPT Malta reveals that there’s a lot of shouting to be done today!

The €2,200 Italian Poker Tour High Roller concluded in Malta on Sunday after 473 entrants were whittled down to the eventual champion, a champion that calls the UK home.

Keith Johnson is usually found grinding cash games but does step into the world of tournament poker occasionally and with decent results to show for it, although none of them are as impressive as this latest haul that weighs in at €144,500.

Johnson outwitted and outlasted a tough final table that housed the likes of Daniel Erlandsson, Noah Vaillancourt, Pierre Neuville, Artur Koren, and Dominik Nitsche before chopping heads up with (and defeating) Germany’s Oliver Weis for €144,500. A fantastic result that should keep Johnson in Werther’s Originals for a few more months.

Over to the online poker world now and the $100,000 Mega Deep at 888poker is one of the tournaments that British players have traditionally performed well in and this weekend was no different because “Patsharpe” managed to navigate his way to a runner-up finish worth $21,157.50 – the largest online cash of his career.

Patsharpe had reached the $100,000 Mega Deep’s final table on three previous occasions, finishing ninth, seventh and fifth so it must have felt fantastic to get the proverbial monkey off his back and take down this star-studded event.

Also at 888poker, Ireland’s Daragh “DonwASpiral” Davey managed a runner-up finish in the $100,000 Sunday Challenge. Davey collected $15,405.11 for his second place finish, while “thevaletor” of the United Kingdom banked $9,592.93 for his third place in the same tournament.

While we are talking about 888poker we have to doff our caps to “03042921” and Cathal “cshine87” Shine who finished third and fifth in the $50,000 Turbo Mega Deep for scores of $7,080 and $3,717, and to “afulari” who added $10,794 to his coffers by finishing second in the $50,000 Sunday Crocodile.

Over at Full Tilt, where the latest FTOPS is in full swing, “podnil” finished sixth from 191 runners in the $2,500 buy-in NL Hold’em FTOPS Event #15 for a cool $25,212.00 while Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi reached the final table of the $500 buy-in Event #18, falling in eighth place for $8,960.45.

The Turbo Multi-Hundo saw “04032129” finished in second place, but not before being part of a three-way chop that secured him a $9,906.88 and a mention for Charlie “chaz_man_chaz” Combes who busted in fifth place in the Big ben for $3,516.24.

Onto PokerStars now and another runner-up finish for one of our players, this time it was “EV4dGloryOMC” who was the bridesmaid in the Sunday Rebuy, a second place that was worth $31,846.50. “Sh0w3rs4u” finished eighth in the same tournament for $5,307.75.

Other notable cashes at PokerStars include a seventh place in the Sunday Million for “aiamolinbaby” ($29,554.80), a seventh place in the Bigger $109 for Sean “MonkeyBudg” Prendiville ($6,818.35), a fifth place in the Sunday Kickoff for “sammyace92” ($6,499.35), a sixth place in the Sunday 2nd Chance for “TheFresKeR” ($9,856.00) and seventh place finish in the Sunday Supersonic for “convict6969” ($4,721.92).
