The Hippodrome Casino near Leicester Square in London played host to the first PokerStars sponsored UKIPT Series of Season 5 on Friday and saw 78 players part company with a £250+£25 as they attempted to follow in the footsteps of past champions such as Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody and, more recently, Paul Findlay.
Those 78 hopefuls locked horns for 12 30-minute levels and during that time, all but 21 of them lost their 30,000 starting stacks and will have to wait until May 29 for another bite of the cherry.
One man who doesn’t have to wait for his chance of obtaining some dangling fruit is Joseph Pateman who saw his stack swell to an impressive 165,000 by the time the tournament director brought the curtain down on the Day 1a action.
According to his Hendon Mob profile, Pateman has live tournament cashes to his name, the most recent being a 76th place finish in the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath in 2013 that banked him £430. Thanks to his field-leading stack, Pateman should be confident of winning an amount that eclipses his career best.
In addition to Pateman, five other players bagged up six-figure stacks as Day 1a concluded.
Romania’s Gabriel Gusetoiu (154,000), Richard Paul (125,900), Jack Germaine (124,200), John Law (120,900) and Nicholas Craze (105,300) each had what they would call successful days at the felt and should find themselves nicely poised for a deep run even after Saturday’s Day 1b is done and dusted.
UKIPT Season 5 Series 1 End-of-Day 1a chip counts
|12||Wing Ken Yeung||51,200|
|13||Cheok Fan Lao||49,600|
Day 1b, the final starting flight, begins at 2:00pm and sees the same 12 levels played out. Everything points towards Day 1b being much larger and busier than its predecessor so head back to the UK & Ireland PokerNews site on Sunday to see how big and busy it got!
