Lithuania's Matas Cimbolas is a man in scintillating form and seemingly can do no wrong at the tables. After winning the partypoker World Poker Tour (WPT) UK Main Event in November for £200,000, Cimbolas went on to reach the final table of the European Poker Tour Deauville Main Event and earlier this week won the Sky Poker UK Poker Championships High Roller.
Now Cimbolas finds himself at the top of the chip counts in the £1 million guaranteed Sky Poker UK Poker Championships Main Event after finishing Day 1d with a colossal stack of 862,500 chips. Surely he can't go on an win this major event too?
An incredible show of support saw 607 entries taken on the final starting flight, which meant the guarantee was met. As was the case when the 2014 Sky Poker UK Poker Championships Main Event ran, it was the British legend Sam Trickett whose buy-in saw the ambitious guarantee hit. Trickett failed to progress to Saturday's Day 2, but 163 of those 607 entries did punch their tickets for the next stage.
The Day 2 player listing reads like a who's who of British poker thanks to a bunch of stars progressing from Friday's Day 1d.
Others who made it through to Day 2 relatively unscathed include Antoine Saout (377,500), Tamer Kamel (357,000), Gabriel Tuna (306,000), Ben Spraggons (269,000), Rupinder Bedi (266,500), John Duthie (249,000), Fraser Bellamy (178,000), reigning champion Leigh Wiltshire (176,500), Will Kassouf (170,000), Jareth East (161,500), Renee Xie (135,500), James Akenhead (124,000), and Richard Kellett (45,500).
