Dermot Blain Reigns Supreme In Ireland

Dermot Blain

Dermot Blain has completed a hat trick of Global Poker Index Player of the Year awards after finishing at the top of the Irish 2014 leader board. Blain topped the 2012 and the 2013 standings and added a third consecutive title in 2014, which we're sure you'll agree is no mean feat.

The 30-year old from Sligo started 2014 strongly with a victory in a €1,100 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha event at European Poker Tour (EPT) Deauville in January for €20,200 and followed that up with a runner-up finish in the JP Poker Masters in Dublin during April for an additional €23,080.

Blain's biggest score of the year weighed in at an impressive €200,900, his reward for winning the €5,300 buy-in No Limit Hold'em 8-Handed event at the EPT Grand Final. The popular pro then headed to Las Vegas for the 2014 World Series of Poker where he reached the money four times including a 316th place finish in the Main Event before stopping off for the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open in September where he cahsed in a $1,650 side event, his last score of 2014.

Blain Tops Irish GPI Rankings

Not only did Blain win the Player of the Year award, he also ended 2014 on top of the Irish GPI rankings, beating Marc MacDonnell by almost 500 points. Rounding out the top 10 places are Andrew King, Daniel Wilson, Peter Murphy, Kevin Killeen, Eoghon O'Dea, Daragh Davey, Jude Ainsworth and Gavin O'Rourke.

We predict that this year's Irish leader board is going to be more hotly contested than ever with the likes of David Lappin, Chris Dowling, Sean Prendiville, John O'Shea and Fergal Nealon starting the year in the top 20 and been only a deep run or two away from a top 10 berth.
