2014 GUKPT Grand Final: Martinez Tops Day 1a Field
The 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Grand Final kicked off on Thursday 27 November at The Poker Room above the famous Grosvenor Victoria Casino and saw a total of 79 entries of £2,000+£124 taken while the registration desk was open. Only 36 of those starters managed to progress through to Saturday's Day 2, with Raul Martinez bagging up the most chips as play ended for the night.
Earlier this year, Martinez finished third in the £330 buy-in London Poker Championships at “The Vic” to bank £5,480. Now he has every chance of eclipsing that amount tanks to finishing Day 1a of the GUKPT Grand Final with 113,900 chips, one of two players to bag up six-figure stacks.
The other player needing to cram more than 100,000 chips into his overnight chip bag was Andrew Christoforou who has a great track record at The Vic. You may recall that Christoforou reached the final table of the 2014 GUKPT London Main Event at the start of the year, falling in third place for a career-best £38,000.
Day 1a was the start day of choice for some of the UK poker scene's familiar faces. Ram Vaswani has been delving back into poker of late and the man known as “Crazy Horse” bamboozled his opponents on the way to accumulating 80,600 chips.
Adam Reynolds (74,300), Paul Vas Nunes (70,800), Martyn Frey (55,100) and Charles Chattha (28,400) are all still in the hunt for their second GUKPT title while the likes of Louise Duffy (72,500), Stuart Fox (52,250), Richard “Chufty” Ashby (38,500), Spanish superstars Vicente Delgado (33,400) and Adrian Mateos (32,800), Patryk Slusarek (23,300), Antoine Saout (19,800) and Danny Laming (14,800) also progressed to the next stage.
