Leg 9 of the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) began on Thursday afternoon at the G Casino in Luton with 54 players choosing Day 1a to start their quest of becoming a GUKPT champion. After nine levels of play only 19 of those who started the event had chips in front of them that needed bagging and tagging.
The name at the top of the Day 1a chip counts is that of Dinarte De Sousa, a talented individual who drives buses by day and his poker opponents to the edge of insanity at night. De Sousa was one of two players finish with a six-figure stack, his 135,000 chips being way ahead of the 104,900 of Richard Pipe.
Also progressing to Saturday’s Day 2 were established players such as Adam Reynolds (99,700), recent WPT National UK London champion Gabriel Tuna (60,800), the legendary Barny Boatman (41,000), Boatman’s fellow Poker mobster Joe Beevers (35,200) and Joe Grech (16,400).

Friday’s Day 1b needs to attract 146 entrants otherwise the prize pool’s £200,000 guarantee will not be met and the GUKPT will have to add to it from its own pockets. We would expect to see the likes of Steve Watts, Matt Davenport, Tamer Kamel, Yucel Eminoglu, and Jeff Kimber to all take another bite at the cherry on Day 1b.
