The 2014 PokerStars UKIPT London Main Event kicked off on Wednesday afternoon and thanks to a massive crowd descending on the lavish Grand Connaught Rooms there is already talk of this year’s £770 buy-in tournament being played by more than 800 players.
A total of 353 players chose Day 1a to begin their quest of becoming a UKIPT champion and it was Garrett Michael Levrini from the United States of America who ended the night with the most chips and therefore the title of chip leader. Levrini accumulated 260,800 chips over the course of 10 hour-long levels to see his name displayed at the top of chip counts, counts with the names of 91 surviving players.
According to our friends at the PokerStars Blog, Levrini is one of Black Friday’s poker refugees and has been living in Prague in order to continue his love for online poker tournaments. Later this week, possibly with the title of UKIPT London champion, Levrini is dipping his toes into the shark infested waters of a European Poker Tour Main Event for the first time. We’ll be on hand to see how that goes for him.
Three other players ended Day 1a with stacks in excess of 200,000 chips. Alain Bissai Logbo (255,600, Fabrizio Fuchs (220,700) and Pablo Gordillo (202,600) being the big stacked trio.
Plenty of big names and established professional players punched their tickets for Friday’s Day 2 including Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder (103,700), Chris Sly (101,300), former November Nine member Sylvain Loosli (100,100), Deborah Worley-Roberts (92,600), Rocco Palumbo (86,500), Vladimir Troyanovskiy (85,000), Danny Blair (81,600), Jonathan Beck (58,800), Andriena Nutt (55,500), Charles Chattha (50,700), Jamie Burland (40,600), Tudor Purice (34,600), Oliver Price (15,000) and Max Silver (13,400).
Unlike the UKIPT Isle of Man Main Event, the London leg is not a re-enter tournament and that means we won’t be seeing the likes of Team PokerStars Pros Jake Cody, Liv Boeree, Christophe De Meulder, Simon Deadman, Dara O’Kearney, and Steve O’Dwyer until the new season that begins in a few months.
