Some of poker’s tournament elite descended on the home of PokerStars for the first of two starting flights in the 2014 UKIPT Isle of Man Main Event and they were all outdone by cash game specialist Donald Rae.
Both Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars were well represented by their ambassadors and Team Pros, but instead of sporting a patch being a golden ticket through to Day 2, it seemed like a poisoned chalice instead with the majority of them busting during Day 1a proceedings.
PokerStars Team Pros Luca Pagano, Eugene Katchalov and Matthias de Meulder all busted before the day was out, as did Full Tilt’s Ben Jenkins and Martins Adeniya. PokerStars’ Team Online Vincent Delgado – the current number one in the UK online rankings – crashed out before he really got out of first gear. No doubt this sextuplet of luminaries will return to the fray on Day 1b by taking advantage of the one re-entry policy.
Thankfully for those wearing them, the apparent curse of the patch didn’t spread as far as Team Online’s Mickey Petersen (26,300 chips), Christophe de Meulder (36,600), Dermot Blain (38,700), or last year’s runner-up and PokerStars SportStar member Fatima Moreira de Melo (91,600) who all made it through to Saturday’s Day 2.
Joining those pros and stars is the aforementioned Donald Rae who managed to turn his 20,000 starting stack into a mountainous 154,900 over the course of 10 hour-long levels. Rae is a somewhat unknown quantity in tournament circles – search for him on The Hendon Mob and your efforts will be fruitless – mainly because he prefers to concentrate on high stakes cash games instead, so if you find yourself sat with Rae on Day 2 don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s some random guy on a heater because those assumptions will come back to haunt you.
Among the 46 who are safely through to Day 2 are Stephen Day (135,000), the hyper-aggressive Ludovic Geilich (123,700), Mohammad Razavi (80,900), Simon Deadman (79,900), Gordon Huntly (76,500), Sam Grafton (76,300), Mark McCluskey (49,300), Yury Gulyy (40,700), Lee Jones (33,000), and Dara Davey (29,900).
