The 2014 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) London Main Event is the largest EPT London since 2011 thanks to 441 players competing on Day 1b of the £4,250 buy-in tournament and taking the total attendance to 665. Of those 441 Day 1b entrants only 245 made it through to Tuesday’s Day 2, with Greece’s Georgios Zisimopoulos bagging up he most chips, 171,500 to be exact.
Zisimopoulos is something of an unknown quantity despite having accumulated almost $180,000 in live tournament winnings. His Hendon Mob page shows he has tasted success in some mid-stakes tournaments in London, Germany, the Czech Republic and Vienna and is hoping for more reasons to celebrate as he steps up to the high stakes EPT Main Event circuit.
The chip lead could have gone either way at the end of the night because Swedish pro Leo Nordin ended the night with 169,100 to be pipped to the post. Zisimopoulos and Nordin lead from the likes of Nicholas Chouity (152,700), Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (147,900) and Spain’s Pablo Gordillo (145,000).
You don’t have to scroll down the chip counts for long before you find the first British player as the only person to have won two EPT Main Event title, Mrs Victoria Coren Mitchell, turned her 30,000 starting stack into an impressive 115,000 over the course of eight 75-minute levels.
Other Brits who safely navigated their way through Day 1b’s shark-infested waters include Adam Reynolds (108,700), the veteran John Gale (108,600), World Poker Tour National Marbella winner Steve Watts (106,000), Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree (102,400), online star Jareth East (81,600), former EPT San Remo winner Rupert Elder (71,600), Leo McClean (48,500), Chris Moorman (44,800), Leon Louis (36,200), Charles Chattha (35,500), James Sykes (28,200), Kevin Allen (24,500), Craig McCorkell (23,300), Steve Warburton (15,500), Talal Shakerchi (14,200) and Roberto Romanello (10,400).
The day wasn’t as kind to the likes of Ludovic Geilich, Tom Middleton, David “Devilfish” Ulliott, UKIPT London champion Brett Angell, Chris Sly, Ben Vinson, Ian Simpson, or Tom MacDonald who all fell during Day 1b proceedings.
