The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) is currently in Yorkshire for eighth leg of its 2014 season. It is the first time that the GUKPT has run its main event in Leeds and it looks set to be a memorable occasion for Jonathan Cooper, at least it will be if his Day 1a success continues on Saturday’s Day 2 and beyond.
Cooper, a local player from Leeds, was one of 66 players to pony up £500+£50 buy-in on Thursday’s Day 1a and it turned out to be a great decision to do so because he ended the day as the chip leader, having turned his 20,000 starting stack into a most-impressive 170,000.
Part of Coopers huge stack came from the legendary Ali Mallu shortly after Level 8 began. UK circuit regular Andrew Hills opened, Mallu three-bet all-in for 25,000 and Cooper four-bet jammed over the top. Hills stepped out of the way and watched on as Cooper’s went to battle against Mallu’s .
It was a battle that Cooper ultimately won, with the board running to send Mallu to the rail; he will no doubt be back for Friday’s Day 1b.
Narrowly missing out in the title of overnight chip leader was the high-stakes cash game guru David “sexygee” Gent who bagged and tagged 165,900 chips at the close of play. Gent recently became a father for the first time and swapped changing nappies and feeding his daughter for riffling chips in the first GUKPT to be held in his home city. He is definitely one to watch going into Day 2 – he’ll be the one who looks like he has had no sleep!
Ben Turnstill had a great day at the felt and ended with 122,600 chips, while Sky Poker UK Poker Championship Main Event winner Alex Spencer (48,700) and Leeds lads Marcin Milde (43,100), Jamie O’Connor (42,900) and David “LeKnave” Jones (36,600) were also among the 22 players who survived the night.
