2014 GUKPT Goliath Day 1b: Burgess Breaks Through 500K Barrier
What better to banish the dreaded Monday Blues than taking the day off work, heading to Coventry and playing in the £250,000 guaranteed 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath Main Event? It is something that 251 players did on the £100+£20 buy-in tournament’s second starting flight and it turned out to be a great decision for Steve Burgess who ended the night as the overall chip leader.
Burgess is a regular at the Grosvenor casino in Manchester where he has won the majority of his £2,220 live tournament winnings. His largest score came in September 2013 when he won a £15 buy-in competition and claimed the £425 first place prize.
Now Burgess is looking for a much larger payday and after turning his 25,000 starting stack into 502,500 chips over the course of 16 levels he has given himself a realistic chance of doing that. Although there is a long, long way to go in this tournament, Burgess is the only man to pass through the 500,000 chip barrier and has done his chances of progressing into the money places no harm at all.
Joining Burgess on Day 2 are players such as Robert Douras (468,500), Sam Wade (459,500), the Isle of Man’s Adam Kelly (425,500), Joe Foster (390,000) and Neville Price (362,500), the latter finished 124th in last year’s Goliath so knows how to approach this beast of a tournament.

The 27 surviving players from Day 1b join up with the 75 from Day 1a on Saturday for the official second day of play. Before then, there are another four starting days, including one on Tuesday at 12:00pm.
Also taking place on Tuesday is the £75+£8 NL Hold’em Win the Button tournament, which is a fun format taken from the European Poker Tour circuit. The Ziggi Cig sponsored Battle of the Sexes is sure to generate plenty of banter when that kicks off at 9:30pm tonight in the Auditorium Hall.
