It is almost two weeks since It is almost two weeks since Christopher “MAKKAPAKK” Johnson outlasted 6,295 opponents in the PokerStars Sunday Million and got his hands on the $191,528.46 first place prize. Something else happened that day, whether it was a massive confidence boost or something else we don’t know, but since that superb result Johnson seems to be crushing online tournaments for fun.
On the same day as his Sunday Million victory, Johnson reached six other final tables including two third place finishes. The following week, Johnson booked a runner-up finish in the PokerStars.fr Big €50, a third place in the PokerStars $51 NL Hold’em Hyper-Turbo and a couple of nights ago the following run of results happened:
- 2nd place in the PokerStars.fr Big €50
- 2nd place in the PokerStars Big $162
- 1st place in the Titan Poker €12,500 GTD Rebuy
- 2nd place in the Full Tilt Poker Turbo Fiddy
- 3rd place in the PokerStars $82 NL Hold’em 6-Max Hyper-Turbo
- 4th place in the PokerStars.fr Big €50
Johnson is now up to fifth in the United Kingdom’s standings and 41st in the entire world. If he managed to keep up his current form, there is no reason why he can’t push into the top three spots in the UK and from there the sky is the limit.
Another player in rich form is Rick “TheClaimer” Trigg who you will know from past articles is one of the highest volume players online. Trigg’s unrivalled work ethic often sees him go on remarkable runs, and one such run happened over the past week. Some of Trigg’s highlights of the past seven days include:
- 2nd place in the Winamax XTASE
- 2nd place in the 888poker $2,500 SHOT
- 1st place in the 888poker $5,000 Lightning
- 3rd place in the 888poker $5,000 Twister
- 1st place in the PokerStars.fr Sunday High Roller
- 2nd place in the 888poker $5,000 Lightning
- 1st place in the PokerStars.fr Storm
- 2nd place in the Winamax XPERT
- 1st place in the PokerStars.fr Big €100
Still at the top of the pile is Patrick “pleno1” Leonard, but we predict that his long reign over the UK grinders faces its most real threat yet because the chasing pack are likely to put in a lot of volume in the coming weeks as they try to rebuild from their World Series of Poker and Las Vegas exploits.
Players such as Toby “810ofclubs” Lewis, Chris “Moorman1” Moorman, Charlie “chaz_man_chaz” Combes, Zimnan “Zimmy” Ziyard, Niall “Firaldo” Farrell and Rhys “floppinhel” Jones should all be back on UK soil and ready to terrorise their opponents at the virtual felt once again.

Cathal Shine Still Climbing, David Scully Looking to Enter Top 10
Kerry’s Cathal “shinerrr” Shine finds himself occupying fourth place in the Irish online poker rankings and within striking distance of Gavin “gavonator” O’Rourke in third place and Jude “j.thaddeus” Ainworth in second.
Shine’s climb since the last time we checked the Irish standings is due to an outright victory in the PokerStars $55 NL Hold’em and a third place in the Hot $44 Turbo, also at PokerStars.
David “Laois Hammer” Scully seems to be putting in decent volume at the virtual felt and it has started to yield some solid results. Judging by his PocketFives.com profile page, Scully looks to play low-to-mid stakes tournaments across a variety of sites and reaches final tables at them with a very high frequency. Surely it is only a matter of time before Scully takes down one of the bigger tournaments on his schedule and then moves up in stakes.
