Race Is On to Challenge Blain in the Irish GPI Rankings

Dermot Blain

Ever since the Global Poker Index (GPI) launched, Dermot Blain has been the man to catch in the Irish standings. That is the case in 2014, where Blain’s name sits atop of the Irish rankings and is next to the number one position in the Player of the Year race.

Blain may be in pole position on both fronts, but judging by how things are shaping up behind him, the next few months should be interesting to say the least, especially in the Player of the Year (POY) race.

There is a substantial 1,185.13 point difference between Blain and second placed Eoghan O’Dea, which even with four months of poker to play in 2014, is going to be a huge gap to bridge. Blain should be ever present in the remaining European Poker Tour (EPT) and UKIPT events of the year, which works in his favour, while many of the chasing pack are not regulars on the EPT where every tournament seems to award big bucks and plenty of precious leaderboard points.

That said, there are still plenty of opportunities to pick up points in some of the other UK & Ireland events such as the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT), Genting Poker Series (GPS), Sky Poker Six-Max UK Championships, the upcoming World Poker Tour Nottingham, Irish Winter Festival and many more besides.

Should the likes of Peter Murphy, Marc MacDonnell, Chris Dowling, Jude Ainsworth, Gavin O’Rourke, John O’Shea, Sean Prendiville or Andrew King get their grind on and put in plenty of volume in the live arena the Blain’s reign could be under threat, especially because each of those players mentioned are capable of holding their own against the game’s most talented individuals.

Chidwick Tops UK Standings, Silver Current POY Leader

Unsurprisingly, seeing how there has been no live poker of note since the 2014 World Series of Poker, the United Kingdom’s GPI leaderboard has remained quite static, with the only a couple of changes in the rankings caused by the decaying of certain points.

There is a lot of poker being played in the coming months, starting with the GPS Newcastle festival, then GUKPT Reading, followed by Sky Poker’s Six-Max championships, BoylePoker IPO Newcastle, start of GUKPT Leeds, the GUKPT Goliath and that’s just in the UK and Ireland. Add into the mix the $1,000,000 Cyprus Poker Open, EPT/Estrellas Poker Tour in Barcelona and a Deep Stack Open in Sanremo in Europe and August is an extremely busy month with lots of opportunities to add GPI Points to tallies.

Max Silver has shot out in front of the POY standings, although there is little separating him, Stephen Chidwick, Simon Deadman or Oliver Price, three players who are almost certainly going to play a lot of live poker in the second half of 2014.

Silver is full of confidence following his six WSOP cashes this summer, plus his heroic performances at EPT Prague, the PCA Main Event and UKIPT Dublin in the run up to the WSOP and looks set to play in the Season 10 EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller. Put a good run together in that and Silver will do his chances of being crowned the UK’s POY no harm at all.
