GUKPT Returns to Cardiff After a Five Year Hiatus

Karl Mahrenholz: The 2009 GUKPT Cardiff Champion

The ever-popular Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) is heading across the Welsh border and into Cardiff for the first time since 2009 for the latest instalment of its 2014 tour.

In September 2009, 120 of the United Kingdom’s best poker players descended on the Grosvenor Casino in Cardiff and bought into the GUKPT Cardiff Main Event for £1,060, creating a £120,000 prize pool as they did so.

After four days of intense poker action, Karl Mahrenholz (pictured) defeated Iwan Jones heads-up to claim the £38,700 first place prize, which happens to still be Mahrenholz’s largest score of a long and illustrious career.

Similar prizes should be on offer for the 2014 edition of the GUKPT Cardiff Main Event, despite the fact the buy-in being slashed to a more affordable £550. Why? Because Grosvenor Casinos are guaranteeing that the prize pool will be at least £100,000 regardless of how many players decided to make the trip to Wales, and with the World Series of Poker in full swing there is a realistic chance of there being a substantial overlay.

The five day festival kicks off with a £110 No-Limit Hold’em freezeout at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday 2nd July, the first of five side events.

The £100,000 guaranteed Main Event starts on July 3 with the first of two starting flights, each costing £550 to enter. Players are permitted to re-enter on each starting flight, meaning those with deep pockets can have four bites at that £100,000 cherry.
