GUKPT Heads to Reading For Its Annual Poker Festival
Reading may be best-known for its annual Reading Festival, but from July 30 through to August 3 it will be the sound of chips riffling, players howling as their aces are cracked and the clinking of champagne glasses as the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) crowns its champions that are the sounds emanating from the Berkshire town.
GUKPT Reading is the seventh leg of the 2014 tour and if the 2013 edition is anything to go by, it should be a superb atmosphere all around. In 2013, the £500+£50 buy-in Main Event attracted 165 players through the doors of the G Casino, making for one of the busiest £550 GUKPT events of all time.
James Martin won the 2013 GUKPT Reading Main Event, besting a tough final table and banking £22,640. Main Event Travel’s David Lloyd finished in eighth place, with Timotheos “Tim Tim” Timotheou falling in fifth place. The recent Grosvenor 25/25 Luton champion Eliie Biessek finished in third place, with Jeff Kimber being the runner-up, but not before coming to an agreement with the eventual champion and pocketing £18,000.
Traditionally, tournaments that run at this time of year see lower turnouts because many players choose to take a month or so from the poker circuit after returning from the World Series of Poker. Thrown into the mix the fact the United Kingdom has been experiencing some hot, sunny weather and the prospect of an overlay is a realistic possibility for the £100,000 guaranteed event
Kicking off the five day of festivities is a £20 rake-free rebuy super satellite that guarantees at least one seat to the £550 Main Event. A £100+£10 NL Hold’em re-entry tournament is the first proper event, with other side events being a £75+£7 Pot Limit Omaha re-entry, a £100+£10 NL Hold’em bounty tournament, a £150+£15 NL Hold’em re-entry and a £100+£10 NL Hold’em 6-Max bringing the GUKPT Reading festival to a close.
The £100,000 guaranteed Main Event runs from July 31 and ends on August 2. Play begins at 1:00 p.m. each day, with the exception of August 2’s Day 2 which starts at 4:00 p.m so that players can pay their respects to the late Kirit Patel at his funeral.
