The reigning UKIPT Nottingham Six-Max Main Event champion Ben Mayhew is the name at the top of the chip counts at the end of the first flight from the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Cardiff Main Event.
Mayhew bagged up an impressive 94,500 chips at the close of play, despite the fact he actually unregistered from the tournament before it began. Mayhew was feeling unwell before the start of play and opted to unregister because he wouldn’t have been able to play his brilliant best. Whether he made a remarkable recover or played through the pain barrier isn’t certain, but whatever it was it certainly worked and he’s now set for a deep run in the Welsh capital.
Joining Mayhew on Saturday’s Day 2 will be fellow big stacks Warren Jones (87,700), Chris Williams (82,000) and Ersin Yetiser (79,700). Also punching their Day 2 ticket was Ben Winsor who you may recall defeated Simon Deadman heads-up in the GUKPT Walsall Main Event in February 2014.
Only 53 players chose Day 1a as their starting flight, which means at least 147 players need to head to Cardiff on Friday and buy in otherwise the GUKPT will once again face the prospect of having to make up the shortfall in the unconditional £100,000 guarantee.
Traditionally, the final starting flight is much more popular than the first, but on this occasion an overlay looks the most likely outcome, although the predicted rain and cold spell set to hit Cardiff may get people to head to the Grosvenor Cardiff for Day 1b of the 2014 GUKPT Cardiff Main Event.
