Matthew Ashton and Mitchell Johnson Climb Into UK GPI Top 20

Matthew Ashton and Mitchell Johnson

The latest United Kingdom Global Poker Index rankings have two new faces in the Top 20 in the shape of Matthew Ashton and Mitchell Johnson.

Liverpudlian Ashton had dropped out of the top 20 due to hardly playing any tournaments since the 2013 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOP). Ashton had a superb WSOP in 2013 where he reached four final tables including an outright victory in the star-studded Poker Players Championship that netted him $1,774,089 in prize money and a gold bracelet.

Ashton then travelled to the WSOPE in an attempt to win the WSOP Player of the Year award and cashed twice.

Since then, Ashton has hardly played and that had caused his ranking to plummet through the ground, but he’s back in the limelight following his third place finish in the $10,000 buy-in WSOP National Championship that banked him $157,399.

Johnson climbs into the top 20 on the back of his 24th place finish in the UKIPT Nottingham Main Event in May. The massive field meant Johnson won £5,980 and he also collected 191.24 points for his GPI total and they were enough to see him push Tom Alner out of the top 20.

The rest of the top 20 is almost identical to those who populated it a month ago, with Stephen Chidwick leading from Jack Salter and David Vamplew. Both Chidwick and Vamplew have been playing 2014 WSOP events so expect them to receive a boost to their points totals in the coming weeks.

Jack Salter Leads UK Player of the Year

Jack Salter is the man to catch in the UK Player of the Year standings having banked plenty of points when he finished as runner-up in the European Poker Tour Grand Final.

Salter is under pressure from the chasing pack, however, as Tom Hall is only 16 points behind and the in-form Simon Deadman only 11 points behind Hall.

With the UKIPT Marbella, GUKPT Cardiff and the remaining events at the 2014 WSOP, there are plenty of opportunities to book huge cash wins and reel in crucial leaderboard points.
