Tipperary’s Andrew Sweeney has returned to the top 20 of the Irish online poker tournament rankings after an impressive brace of wins at the world’s largest online poker site PokerStars.
Sweeney hadn’t registered an online cash since May 18, presumably taking a holiday away from the glare of his computer’s monitor, but returns on June 3 with a trio of them. One of those cashes was a first place finish in The Big $109 that netted Sweeney $21,108.98, which happens to be his third largest score of his online career.
His victory was made sweeter by the fact he defeated talented German pro Gereon “huiiiiiiiiii” Sowa heads-up to secure first place. Sowa is currently ranked 13th in the world and has been placed as high as second during 2014.
The following night, Sweeney bested a field of 1,389 in The Hot $33 Turbo to add $6,961,67 to his bankroll. This result and his win in The Big $109 added more than 550 leaderboard points to his PocketFives.com tally and were enough to push Sweeney into 18th place in the Irish rankings.
Dublin-based American Steve “MrTimCaum” O’Dwyer is warming up nicely for a run at the 2014 World Series of Poker after finishing third in the Full Tilt Poker Saturday Six-Max ($2,553.10) and winning the PokerStars $55 NL Hold’em 6-Max Turbo ($4,889.30). O’Dwyer also had a few other four-figure scores and one can’t help but feel something big is around the corner for him.

Two players to look out for at the next rankings update are Daniel “danielt999” Tighe whose third place finish in the PokerStars $215 NL Hold’em Turbo netted him over $5,000 and 106.77 leaderboard points, but the result came too late to count towards his current tally.
Also, Tomas “luckymo32” Geleziunas binked two tournaments that are not yet showing on his profile. Geleziunas won the $55 NL Hold’em 1R1A and the $31 NL Hold’em Hyper-Turbo to bolster his bankroll by almost $5,000 and his points balance by over 180 points.
Dermot Blain Still Number One Irish Live Poker Player
Following his win in the €5,300 No Limit Hold’em 8-handed event at the European Poker Tour Grand Final, Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Dermot Blain has put plenty of distance between himself and his nearest rival in the Irish Global Poker Index.
Blain tops the current crop of players and has 2,310.66 points to his name, while second-placed Chris Dowling has 1,252.98. Unsurprisingly, Blain also tops the Irish Player of the Year and looks set to win his third consecutive title that is unless one of his fellow Irishmen go on a massive heater during the second half of the year.
There are a number of Irishmen currently grinding away at the WSOP in Las Vegas and some of them have managed to bank some cash.
Tenth placed John O’Shea finished 12th in the $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha event for $11,593 and 136.30 points and would have walked away with a bracelet, $205,634 and 210.85 points had Lady Luck shone down on him in the latter part of the tournament.
Peter Murphy and Sean Prendiville both cashed in the Millionaire Maker at the 2014 WSOP; Murphy finished 576th for $3,446 while Prendiville came ever so close to a huge score when he finished 23rd and picked up a welcomed $50,614 for his efforts.
