Flight 1 of the 2014 partypoker World Poker Tour National UK Tour Newcastle Main Event is over and done with, the 133 players who started the tournament with high hopes whittled down to a more manageable 60.
While the 73 bustees will no doubt be disappointed not to have progressed to Saturday’s Day 2, they have another two bites at the juicy proverbial cherry thanks to the unique accumulator format these Main Events are played to.
In fact, the 60 players who made it through to Day 2 can also compete on Friday afternoon’s Flight 2 and the evening’s Flight 3, providing they stump up the £200 buy-in on both occasions.
One man who has a decision to make is local player Khadir Khoshway who ended Flight 1 as the tournament’s chip leader. Khoshway had to cram 163,600 chips into an overnight chip bag as play ended on Thursday night and now has to sit back and hope his impressive total still leads at the end of the next two starting flights, or try and add more chips to his stack by playing in the remaining two flights.
Plenty of established players are in the same boat as Khoshway, having survived the Flight 1 action. Daniel Trett (103,500) is no stranger to major tournaments in Newcastle and will almost certainly show his face at some point on Friday, and the same can probably be said for the likes of Alex Jobling (54,200), Eldon Orr (51,500), Jonathan Beck (41,900), UKIPT Newcastle champion Gareth Walker (38,300), and Mike “Da Bookie” Hill (26,400).
Flight 2 kicked off at 2:00pm with the third and final flight commencing at 8:00pm this evening.
