GUKPT heads to Walsall For Leg 5 of the 2014 Season

GUKPT Walsall

With the first events of the 2014 World Series of Poker being in full swing, it is easy to forget that the entire poker world isn’t in Las Vegas right now and that other prestigious, long-running poker tours are still offering great value closer to home.

On Thursday 29 May, the fifth Main Event of the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour gets under way at the Grosvenor G Casino on Bentley Mill Way in Walsall.

The £500+£50 buy-in Main Event is the showpiece tournament of the five-day festival and carries with it a massive unconditional £100,000 guaranteed prize pool. The previous two legs, in Edinburgh and Brighton, have both overlaid and word around the campfire is the GUKPT think there is every chance of an unwanted hat trick of Main Event overlays in Walsall.

All of the tournaments shown in the table above are played to a re-entry format, which gives players the chance to lower the vicious variance that tournament poker produces.

If we take last year as a benchmark, 144 players bought in for £550 and created a prize pool of £86,000.

David Tighe walked away from The Black Country with the largest slice of that pie, his win being worth £24,910. Tighe bested a talented final table that seated the likes of Sky Poker Pro Julian Thew, Tim Slater and Tighe’s heads-up opponent Charles Denton.

Should the 2014 edition receive similar entries, the GUPT is looking at adding around £14,000 to the prize pool, or the equivalent of 28 players. The situation could be made worse by the fact the Unibet Open Tallin is running at the same time and many are heading to UKIPT Marbella in a couple of weeks and using their money for that.

All said and done, this tournament may not be the most glamorous on the calendar but it could be one of the best value events of the year so far. Get to Walsall and fill your boots!
