Both starting flights of the 2014 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Walsall are now complete and for the third Main Event in a row the GUKPT has had to add money to the prize pool. Day 1b needed to attract 124 entrants, but fell short by four leaving the GUKPT nursing a £2,000 overlay.
Of those 120 entries only 45 managed to make it through to Saturday’s Day 2. Don Jones had the best day of all, bagging up 136,000 chips at the close of play to claim the title of Day 1b chip leader and finish second overall across the two start days.
Jones is a regular in poker tournaments in the Midlands and has some impressive results to his name. In 2006, Jones finished second to Tim Flanders in the £1525 Midlands Medley at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall and took home £36,000.
More recently, in 2012, Jones reached the final table of the Genting Poker Series (GPS) Birmingham Main Event, eventually finishing in fifth place for a £13,000 score.
In addition to Jones, four other players had to try cram chips worth over 100,000 into an overnight chip bag. Jonathan “Gil3000” Gill finished with 131,800 and added to his already glowing reputation of being an up and coming star, while Mo Quershi’s 130,000 was the third biggest stack in the room.
Charlie Ihle starts Day 2 armed with 102,000 while everyone’s favourite Polish teach / poker player Ellie Biessek ended the night with 100,200 chips.
Despite the 2014 World Series of Poker being in full swing, some of the countries most established tournament players opted to make the trip to Walsall instead. Players such as Rob Sherwood (62,400), Ben Winsor (60,700), Will Kassouf (49,800), Ben Jackson (39,300), Yucel “Mad Turk” Eminoglu (36,500), Dan “luckyscrote” Carter (35,900), Southport’s finest John Eames (34,800), and European Poker Tour London third place finisher Leo McClean (31,900) all bought in and progressed to the next stage of the tournament.
There were also a handful of Britain’s top talent who fell at various points of the day and will have to watch on from the rail. Willie Tann, Amy Trodd, Liam Batey, Martin Bader, Tan Le, Paul Coughlan, and Paul “ActionJack” Jackson, all came and busted before the day’s end.
