2014 UKIPT Nottingham Main Event Day 1a: Mauricio Baez Tops the Counts

Mauricio Baez

The first of three start days in the 2014 UKIPT Nottingham Main Event kicked off on Wednesday lunchtime when inroads were made into reaching that magical £1 million guaranteed prize pool. A total of 175 entries were taken on Day 1a, with 42 of those progressing to Saturday’s Day 2.

Mauricio Baez made the trip from Madrid in order to compete in this event and it looks like it could have been a great decision to do so on his part as he finished Day 1a with the title of chip leader. According to the PokerStars Blog, Baez is a 27-year old cash game pro from Paraguay who now resides in sunny Spain. Baez set the bar at 184,800 chips for anyone playing in upcoming Day 1s.

Joining Baez at the nicest end of the leader board was Ben Vinson, who ended the night with 180,100 chips. Vinson had earlier busted the £3,300 buy-in High Roller in 13th for £6,050 and jumped straight into the £1,100 buy-in Main Event, ran riot at the Dusk Till Dawn tables and has set himself up for another deep run in Nottingham.

Alex Spencer, who you may recall won the inaugural Sky Poker UK Poker Championships Main Event at DTD in February, did his chances of a second victory on DTD soil by turning his 20,000 starting stack into 171,900 over the course of 10 hour-long levels.

The same can be said for Ben Mayhew who starts Day 2 with 134,900 chips at his disposal. Mayhew won the UKIPT Nottingham Six-Max Main Event in December 2013 for a career-best score of £72,840. Ironically, Vinson also did well in that tournament and eventually busted in fourth place. I’m sure both players would welcome a similar result in this £1 million guaranteed event.

Other notables who managed to survive Day 1a’s antics and therefore avoid having to use their one re-entry on Day 1b or Day 1c include Sky Poker’s Ryan Spittles (130,300), Tom “hitthehole” Middleton (87,500), UKIPT crusher Max Silver (76,100), Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody (70,000), Ben “f3nix35” Dobson (56,100), Alex Lindop (50,000), the legendary Willie Tann (46,200), and Germany’s Martin Mulsow (31,400).
