World Poker Tour National UK Tour Heads To Newcastle
Why-aye Man! The city that gave us the silky football skills of Paul Gascoigne, the weekly drama of Byker Grove, the long legs of Donna Air and the double act that is Ant and Dec plays host to the latest leg of the partypoker World Poker Tour National UK Tour.
Aspers Newcastle is the venue for the fourth leg of the five stop inaugural tour and it looks set to be an absolute cracker. If there is one thing that Geordies love – aside from football, beer and not wearing a coat on a night out – it is poker so expect the Aspers casino be cram-packed to the rafters for the £200 accumulator Main Event.
The accumulator format has proven very popular with everyone who has competed in the three previous legs of the WPT National UK Tour: two stops in London and one in Milton Keynes.
The opening event, held in October 2013, saw 510 players descend on the Apsers Casino Westfield in Stratford, London who in turn created a £91,800 prize pool. The lion’s share of that amount went to John Ventre who emerged victorious to scoop the £20,250 first place prize.
Two months later and John Gudger – father of recent PKR Team Pro edition Eleanor Gudger – outlasted 292 players at the Casino MK in Milton Keynes to give himself a £12,750 Christmas present.
More recently, at the start of March, Laurence “rivermanl” Houghton banked £27,500 when he took down the second London Main Event, which saw total buy-ins of 763!
While the Newcastle leg probably won’t hit that astronomical figure, due to space restrictions above anything else, the WPT believe around 300 players will buy-in over the three starting flights as the prize pool has a generous £50,000 guarantee slapped on it.
In addition to the Main Event, which runs May 1-4, there is an £80 buy-in 8-Max Bounty tournament, a £55 buy-in Turbo Deepstack and a £110 buy-in WPTN Experience event for you to get your teeth into.
As always, UK & Ireland PokerNews will bring you regular updates from the Main Event over the course of the weekend.
