Confidence is key to success in poker and confidence is something that Grosvenor Casinos sponsored pro Jeff Kimber has in abundance. Last weekend Kimber won the inaugural PKR Live Mixed Max event and this weekend it is his name at the top of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Edinburgh Main Event Day 1b chip counts.
Kimber ended Day 1b with 124,500 chips, enough to put him in fourth place overall going into Saturday’s Day 2. Kimber has a fantastic record in GUKPT Main Events, with his last two cashes being runner-up finishes: 2nd in the 2013 Reading Main Event for £18,000 and 2nd in the 2013 Manchester Main Event for £43,000.
While we’re sure Kimber would take another second place finish – if that happened it would be his fourth on the GUKPT – we also know he will not be completely happy unless he has a repeat of the 2008 Walsall Main Event, a tournament he won for £83,910.
Day 1b saw exactly 100 entries taken, meaning there was an overlay of £8,000 on the £100,000 guarantee. Among the 34 who made it through relatively unscathed include Graham Pilkington (117,100), Hee Ying Tao (103,200) and Stuart Thomson (92,500), plus such notables as GUKPT Thanet winner Andrew Teng (82,000), Tim Finne (81,000), Joe Beevers (53,600), Amy Trodd (40,500), Ludovic Geilich (33,000) and Ben Jackson (19,100).
The 34 Day 1b survivors and the 28 who progressed from Thursday’s Day 1a return to the Grosvenor Casino Maybury at 1:00pm and play until the money bubble bursts and then on towards the final table. Return to UK & Ireland PokerNews on Sunday morning to discover who is still the hunt for the title of 2014 GUKPT Edinburgh champion.
