The 2014 UK Student Championships Are Here!

2014 UK Student Poker Championships

The 10th annual UK Student Poker Championships (UKSPC), which is now part of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT), gets under way on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off in spectacular style with the £110 High Roller side event.

More than 400 students from 50 universities from across the United Kingdom and beyond are expected to attend the six-day festival held at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. Students from St. Andrews University have organised the tournament in conjunction with the GUKPT, resulting in the festival expanding to include a Main Event with three starting flights, a Pot Limit Omaha tournament and even a six-max event.

The Main Event, which begins Wednesday 9 April at 1:00pm, has a buy-in of £35 and allows experienced players to play for big prizes In 2013, the tournament saw over 450 entries, all of who were outlasted by the eventual champion Ben Foxwell. There are already almost 200 players registered online so the organisers are hopeful of a record-breaking attendance.

The entire event is to be live streamed on the GUKPT website completed with holecard information thanks to state-of-the-art RFID card technology. In addition to the stream, there is a live reporting team on the tournament floor performing the usual blogging duties, taking action-shots and pictures each and every day of the championships.

You will also be able to get a daily round-up of all the action and see the winners right here on UK & Ireland PokerNews.

The students sure know how to party and there is always a great atmosphere at the Ricoh for the week. As student travel in large groups from every university, this ensures a rowdy final table rail on the Sunday afternoon with over 100 people trying to cheer the trophy back to their university.

The high-roller kicks off Tuesday (April 8) at 5:00pm and sees players start with with a generous helping of 20,000 chips and they'll play to blinds that increase every 30-minutes. Following the style of the European Poker Tour (EPT), late-registration is available up to the start of Day 2, which should see the prize pool swell over £10,000.
