The £200 buy-in partypoker World Poker Tour National UK London Main Event may have one of the longest tournament names in history of the game and if the second and third starting flights are anything like Thursday’s Flight 1, it could be one of the biggest tournaments ever held at Aspers Stratford casino.
When this tournament ran at this stunning venue in October 2013, 510 entries were taken over the course of the trio of starting flights, with 188 choosing the first of those three start days. Flight 1 of the 2014 edition attracted 217 entries, a 15% increase meaning the tournament could be on course to hit 600 runners, which would be a remarkable number for the fledgling tour.
Of those 217 Flight 1 entries only 99 managed to make it through to Saturday’s Day 2 with some chips at their disposal. Reza Fazeli had the best day of those 99 survivors thanks to bagging up a tournament leading 143,200 as play ended for the night.
Three other players turned their 20,000 starting stacks into piles containing over 100,000 chips. Ryan Kelly (127,200), Philip Gould (126,800) and Steven Mitchell (108,700) being those players joining Fazeli in the “we have monster stacks” club.
Also through to Day 2 are Paul Romain (55,200), new father Laurence Houghton (39,900), Nick Van de Weyer (34,600), partypoker Team Pro Kara Scott (33,300), American star Andrew Badecker (28,400), UK Poker Championships Main Event finalist Charles Chattha (27,400), Andrew Brisland (23,200), Leon Campbell (18,100) and Dave Shallow (5,700).
2013 partypoker WPT National UK London Flight 1 Top 10 Chip Counts
Although the aforementioned players are through to Saturday’s Day 2, it is possible they will be back in action on Friday’s Flight 2 and 3 thanks to the special accumulator format that the WPT National UK Main Events play to. Players can play in all three flights if they wish and if they progress from more than one of those flights they merge their stacks into one big stack when they sit down on Day 2.
According to the partypoker blog, both Chaz and Sunny Chattha are set to play both of Friday’s flights, as is Kara Scott, former Eastenders actor FeMichael “Beppe” Greco, and the famous Hendon Mobster Barny Boatman, Ross Boatman and Joe Beevers. It should be a fantastic day of poker at Aspers Westfield.
